“If It’s On YouTube, It Must Be OK”: Young Vietnamese Americans Say Their Parents Are Falling Prey To Conspiracy Videos
Young Vietnamese Americans are desperately trying to counter social media algorithms and far-right YouTube personalities that have pulled their families into conspiracy theories, strained relationships, and caused paranoia about the safety of vaccinations. “If you spoke to any young Vietnamese American now, they’ll probably talk about how horrified they are about what their parents are watching,” said Anh Thu Bui, a board member of the Progressive Vietnamese American Organization (PIVOT), a group of progressive organizers who launched Viet Fact Check, a volunteer-led project to fact-check misinformation. The YouTube channels have become ubiquitous in some Vietnamese homes. They have spread a range of conspiracy theories surrounding the pandemic and vaccinations, including lies that people who wear masks are more likely to contract the disease, that the COVID-19 death toll has been exaggerated, and that more people have died from receiving the vaccine than from COVID-19. They’ve … [Read more...] about “If It’s On YouTube, It Must Be OK”: Young Vietnamese Americans Say Their Parents Are Falling Prey To Conspiracy Videos
Russian competition watchdog opens case against Google over YouTube curbs
MOSCOW: Russia's Federal Antimonopoly Service ( FAS ) said on Monday it had initiated proceedings against U.S. tech giant Alphabet Inc's Google for allegedly abusing its dominant market position in video hosting services. Google has already come under pressure from the authorities this year for failing to delete what Russia calls banned content. Other western internet companies have also been targeted by Moscow, including Twitter Inc , which has been punitively slowed down. Google did not immediately respond to a request for comment. The FAS said the case concerned Google's YouTube unit and that the company's actions had resulted in the sudden blocking and deletion of some users' accounts, which it said could lead to restricted competition. The state agency last week initiated proceedings against Yandex, sometimes referred to as 'Russia's Google', over competition law violations on the company's search engine, allegations that Yandex has denied. … [Read more...] about Russian competition watchdog opens case against Google over YouTube curbs
Advertising CEO: Google, Facebook Must ‘Step Up’ to Fight Extremist Content on Their Platforms
The CEO of advertising giant WPP, Martin Sorrel, declared advertisers boycotting YouTube for hosting extremist content “doesn’t make sense,” but that Google and Facebook need to “step up” their fight against the inappropriate content on their platform. Speaking to CNBC , Sorrel discussed the recent boycott of YouTube by many advertisers who were upset that advertisements for their products were appearing alongside extremist content on the video sharing platform. Sorrell stated that while companies may have reason to temporarily disable their ads on YouTube, a permanent suspension of ads on the platform is not beneficial to YouTube or advertisers. “Boycotting what is one of the most powerful, if not the most powerful medium, doesn’t make sense,” Sorrell told CNBC. WPP invests a lot of money in advertisement, spending $5 billion advertising with Google last year on behalf of their clients. This makes Google the largest digital platform that the company invests in, spending … [Read more...] about Advertising CEO: Google, Facebook Must ‘Step Up’ to Fight Extremist Content on Their Platforms

Non-profit organization PragerU, founded by radio host Dennis Prager to produce short informative videos on conservative topics, has been permanently banned from the Chinese-owned social media app TikTok for “multiple violations” of the platform’s community guidelines. According to PragerU, Silicon Valle has a “proven track record of silencing conservative voices and being against free speech,” and TikTok has joined a “competition for who can be the most woke.” PragerU told Breitbart News that it has reached out to TikTok several times to get more information and clarity on why its account was blacklisted but has yet to hear a response. Moreover, PragerU personalities Amala Ekpunobi and Will Witt went to TikTok’s U.S. headquarters in Culver City, California, to ask the company’s employees in person why the organization’s account was banned — but all of the employees appeared to be working remote. “We went to the TikTok office to get to the bottom of the ban. Unfortunately, … [Read more...] about PragerU: TikTok Joins Big Tech ‘Competition for Who Can Be the Most Woke’
